1-2-3 socks

I am a sock knitter. Like, if I was meeting someone and they asked what I did, "I knit socks" would be right up there with, "I have a farm," and "I eat cheese."

The act of holding needles (dpns for me), and knitting in the round with fingering weight yarn, feels as vital to my daily life as walking, hugging goats, and...well, eating cheese. I feel really incomplete if I don't have a sock project (ha...let's be honest, 3-5 sock projects), on the needles.

So, with all the optimistic enthusiasm of a new calendar, I'm planning to share my sock adventures with you in 2025. I knit a lot of simple, but fun patterns, and occasionally I try something really unusual. If you're interested in expanding your sock horizons - or if you're a seasoned adventurer yourself, looking for inspiration - please subscribe to the blog. Here's a bit of what you can expect...

Waltz Socks (1-2-3, 1-2-3)

These socks are the sort of socks that look way more impressive than the work that went into them. They can be knit however you make your favorite vanilla pair (toe-up, top-down, whatever heel or toe you love). You'll use two different yarns, in this example, a rainbow stripe and a solid. And you just alternate them to the count of 1 round, 2 rounds, 3 rounds.

1 round MC
2 rounds CC
3 rounds MC

1 round CC
2 rounds MC
3 rounds CC

I knit these top-down and you can count the sequence in the photo pretty easily, once you know what you're looking for. I used Woolens and Nosh for the stripe, and dyed an the ecru to go with it. (If you'd ever like a solid to go with any of my stripes, please let me know! I love dyeing semi-solid skeins.)

Here are a few links for more info. They're all to Ravelry.
The original project credited with this pattern is by Sox Therapist, from 2015.
I learned about them from the Socks from Stash group. It seems that someone in that group is always working on a pair. (If you're on Ravelry and knitalongs are your thing, I really recommend this group! The challenges are creative and the atmosphere is very, very relaxed. There are multiple ways to participate, whether you can knit a pair of socks in a month, or if you prefer a less strenuous pace.)

That group also hosted a "bending stripes" theme in October. There is a lot of inspiration in that thread if you're looking to mix up your stripe knitting.

The current KAL for Socks from Stash is to knit a pattern that begins with either a vowel or one of the most uncommon letters in the English alphabet. The pattern I picked is Alegria (Rav link) from 52 Weeks of Socks, vol 2. I am also participating in the 26 Pair Plunge (where you finish 26 pairs of socks in one year).

As the English alphabet has 26 letters, and I'm starting the new year with a pattern beginning with A, I have drawn on the optimistic enthusiasm of the New Year to create a scheme of knitting sock patterns from A-Z.

Any guesses on how far I'll get before being totally distracted? I thought I could def make it to "J," but Bill was only willing to bet on "F." Tell me what you think! I might need to draw on your belief in my commitment later in the year.

Alegria has Atypical construction, and I'll be back soon with a few other pairs of recent socks that fit that theme.

Until then, happy sock knitting (and cheese eating), Friends!
