Virtual Festival - Schedule of Events!! (April 17-19)

Social Distancing is not keeping this girl from experiencing her favorite events of any year - fiber festivals. I'll hole up in my house for weeks at a time, and eat meal of rice after rice after rice. But, I'm not missing out on visiting with the best people on earth, and celebrating wool! I hope you can join me, Bill, and our farm animals for a little virtual festival on April 17-19.

The plan is to post video classes and demos, hold prize drawings, and just provide a little virtual gathering place for some rad knitters, crocheters, and spinners. We're still working out the details, but I can present you a schedule of events!

Bill is going to show you how he shears our sheep, how he lovingly cranks your yarn into sock tubes, and how he built an $80 espinner that I love.

I'm preparing two class-style videos. The first is on how you can dye self-striping yarn. We'll start with an idea, prepare some yarn, and then dye it. You don't need any special equipment to participate, but you may want to pick up some Kool-Aid packets, cake dye, or Easter egg dyes if they are available at your grocery store. I know all our shopping routines are disrupted and wanted to make sure you had lots of advance notice. All these dyes are food safe and can be used in your standard pots.

The second class is Spinning a Batt and will cover different spinning styles, the components of a batt, and lots of ideas for knitting with handspun.

Your participation is what is going to make this festival feel, well, festive. I hope you'll put on some knitwear that you'd like to show off, and share a picture of your festival outfit on Instagram. I'll do a prize drawing from all entries (and if you're wearing something from Knit Spin Farm wool or yarn, you'll get two entries!). We'll do a second prize drawing on Sunday from everyone who shares a post on Instagram of how they participated in the festival. Did you dye, or even just design some self-striping yarn? Did you gather some supplies for a DIY espinner? Did you enjoy some festival videos while eating tacos?? If you share a photo, you could win a prize! (I mean, like a physical prize from me, beyond the obvious prize of connecting with a community despite our current physical limitations.)

There will be a few random surprises too. Pullo tells me he's working on something fun? I don't think he's ever done anything like this before, though, so I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. But he seems really excited, and we're glad to encourage his creativity no matter the results.

More information will be posted here over the coming weeks. You can also follow along on Instagram. When we get a YouTube channel set up, I'll announce the link. In the meantime, here's the official Schedule of Events. You know you can trust it because there's an inexplicable taco?

  • What an exciting idea! I’m pretty sure the Aussie yarn festival (Australian Sheep and Wool) at Bendigo each July is looking pretty dicey, so I’ll have to go to one in the States, well virtually go!
